Why
in Emeryville?
Actually Emeryville was our second
choice. We'd been rebuffed by the Richmond zoning staff. After
finding what we thought be a perfect site and presenting our plan,
a staffer told us that auto salvage places were an unsavory use
which might potentially encourage crime(!). So we shifted our
focus to Emeryville and found our place on Harlan St.. At that
time ('78) there was practically nothing but industry (and the
Townhouse Bar and Grill) in Emeryville. The planning commission
approved our application for a use permit by unanimous decision.
It was purely coincidental that the mayor at the time was a Porsche
enthusiast.
